Transportation in Schengen Countries
Trains
Train travel in Europe is by far the most popular way to explore the continent. Travellers can get a Europe rail pass or Eurail Pass that offers access to trains in up to 33 countries. Apps like Rail Planner and Trainline also make ticket booking and scheduling much easier.
Bus
Buses are perfect for backpackers and small groups of 2-3. Compared to cars, buses offer more amenities like food, Wi-Fi and comfortable seating, and some buses even have bathrooms on board. You can easily find tickets for popular Trans-European bus companies like Flixbus and Eurolines.
Air Travel
Budget airlines are the way to go if you’ve picked air travel. You can usually find flight tickets between $50-$250 or even less. The only catch here is that budget tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable, and many airlines only accept online bookings.
Ferries and Boats
Ferries are a good alternative to air travel for countries across the sea, like Finland or Estonia. Italy and Spain share sea routes in Southern Europe, and France, Italy, Croatia and Greece all also share sea routes.
Bikes and Cars
Car-sharing or bicycles, scooters and segways are perfect for city travel. Car rentals are also quite cheap if you are travelling with family or in a larger group.
Travelling to Europe on a Budget
Look Into Eurail or Train Passes: Train travel is usually the cheapest in Eastern and Southern Europe. Websites like Omio, Rome2Rio and Trainline are great for comparing prices.
Book in Advance: Use sites like SkyScanner, Kiwi, Kayak and Momondo to book in advance on budget airlines. The cheapest flights are available in December, January and February.
Travel Off-Peak: The best time to travel to Europe on a budget would be the off-season. The cheapest European countries for Indians are mostly found in Southeast Europe.
Eat Like a Local: Cook whenever possible, and look for authentic, local restaurants as they tend to be cheaper.
Discount Cards and Coupons: Popular discount cards include the European Youth Card (EYC), which offers discounts on transport, food, etc., for travellers under 30.
