The southernmost state of Kerala is one of the most beautiful states known for its scenic setting and beaches. However, like any other emerging urban establishment, Kerala's population has grown drastically in the last few decades.

The mounting population is accompanied by many challenges. When we talk about traffic management, traffic congestion is a severe one to count on.

This article discussed a specific aspect of traffic management, i.e., no-parking fines in Kerala, and provides valuable insights on the parking rules in Kerala: when are you liable to pay no-parking fines and at what rates?

Furthermore, it sheds light on the options available for paying no-parking penalties and the period of paying imposed Kerala traffic fines.

Parking Rules in Kerala

Following are the Kerala RTO parking rules that every vehicle owner has to follow while they park their vehicle:

  1. Whenever you park your car on a road, make sure it is done in a way that does not create danger, block others, or cause problems. If signs or markings are telling you how to park, follow them.

  2. Do not park your vehicle:

Close to a road crossing, bend, hilltop, or humpbacked bridge. This could make it hard for others to see or drive.

On a footpath where people walk.

Near a traffic light or a place where people cross the road.

On a main road with fast-moving traffic.

Across from another parked car or in a way that blocks others.

Next to another parked car.

On roads marked with a continuous white line, with or without a broken line.

Close to a bus stop, school, hospital entrance, or anything that has a traffic sign or leads to a building or fire hydrant.

On the wrong side of the road.

Where parking is not allowed.

  1. Ensure that your vehicle is parked close to the edge of the footpath when you park.

When are You Liable to Pay Fine for No-Parking in Kerala?

Violating government-established parking regulations in Kerala will lead to fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. The following actions are subject to penalties:

Violation of any parking rules as stated above.

Parking vehicles in designated no-parking zones.

Incorrectly parking vehicles in public areas, causing inconvenience or harm to others.

Illegally parking vehicles on main roads or footpaths.

Parking vehicles with non-functional parking lights.

What are the No-Parking Fine Charges in Kerala?

Parking your vehicle in prohibited areas, such as on the sidewalk, cycle track, or a busy road, poses risks and creates inconvenience for others.

In accordance with Section 122/177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, this behaviour is unlawful. The prescribed fine for parking in no-parking zones, Kerala traffic regulations is as follows:

Current Challan Rate for improper or intruding Parking in Kerala
For first time ₹500/-
For any subsequent time ₹1,500/-

Parking your vehicle in an unauthorised location may result in fines by the aforementioned provisions. The Transport Commissioner, who heads the parking fee committee, determines the no-parking fines in Kerala for two-wheelers and cars and has the power to modify the base fee annually.

If your vehicle is seized and relocated by traffic police authorities, with a no-parking challan, towing charges will be applicable. The applicable charges are as follows:

Towing Charges as per Vehicle Type in Kerala
Two-Wheeler ₹100/-
Four-Wheeler ₹200/-
Empty LMC/truck ₹300/-
Loaded LMC/truck ₹400/-
Buses ₹400/-

It is important to note that as per the no-parking section in the MV Act, penalties for vehicle challans, such as car no-parking fines or two-wheeler parking fines, may vary across states and cities. This variation is implemented to ensure the safety of everyone and maintain smooth traffic flow.

Importance of Having a Valid Insurance Policy for Your Vehicle

Following traffic rules is necessary for everyone's safety. Still, our job is to protect our vehicles from unexpected events, especially in busy cities.

An intelligent way to do this is by getting insurance for a bike or car. This kind of insurance helps cover the costs if something happens to your vehicle. At Tata AIG, we have different car and bike insurance plans that are affordable and easy to buy online.

Additionally, if you buy comprehensive car or motorcycle insurance,it pays for damages to your vehicle caused by accidents, natural disasters, or theft. You can also add extra coverage based on what you need and can afford.

Conclusion

Avoiding no-parking fines in Kerala is not just about saving money. It is a responsibility we all share for effective traffic management and the safety of everyone. While dealing with fines is straightforward if you break traffic rules, our focus should be on prioritising safety over immediate financial concerns.

Properly parking your vehicle optimises limited parking space in towns and cities and reduces the risk of accidents and traffic jams. Additionally, ensuring sufficient insurance coverage for your vehicle is crucial for compliance and financial protection in case of accidents or damages.

Let us be more mindful of our parking habits to dodge penalties and contribute to a well-organised urban environment for everyone's benefit.
