Difference between BSIV & BSVI Engine: BS4, BS6 Performance

The Central Pollution Control Board, which is part of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change, sets pollution emission standards and timelines for implementation and regulation of the air pollutants coming out from internal combustion motors and spark-ignition motors in vehicles.

The BS6 norms are quite different from those of the BS4. When contrasted to BS4, the BS6 emissions criteria are substantially harsher. Vehicle makers, particularly two-wheeler makers, must implement these modifications by revising vehicle models.

• BS6 fuels are substantially cleaner than BS4 fuels because they contain less sulphur, which results in decreased emissions and pollutants.
• NOx emissions of (no more than) 60 mg/km are required under BS6 standards (nitrogen oxides). In the context of BS4 standards, this was 80mg/km.
• The sulphur concentration of BS6 fuel is fivefold reduced (10ppm) than that of BS4 fuel (50ppm).
• BS6 contains compounds that mimic sulphur's lubricating characteristics, whereas BS4 uses real sulphur.
• The Real Driving Emission standard will correspondingly be enforced in BS6 to estimate an automobile’s pollutant emissions in real-time situations. This was not the case with the BS4.
• The Onboard Diagnostic (OD) facility is present in BS6 but not in BS4.
• Another notable difference between BS4 vs BS6 is that BS6 compliant engines must utilise BS6 fuel, and when a BS6 motor utilises BS4 motor fuel, the BS6 norms will be considered broken.

With the assistance of a converter, the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) mechanism transforms nitrogen oxide (NOx) into diatomic nitrogen or water. The SCR system utilises AdBlue or diesel fumes fluid to minimise NOx levels. When exhaust fumes contact AdBlue liquid, urea is transformed to ammonia or carbon dioxide, transforming NOx into water vapour and nitrogen, reducing pollution.

With the rising levels of pollution in India, this move by the government is a welcome one. Now, it is our turn to be responsible citizens and use vehicles that comply with the BS6 standards and ensure that the pollution emissions by our vehicles are as minimal as possible. We should also ensure we are not taking the cheaper way out by substituting BS6 standards with its predecessors.
