Your passport is an essential travel document. It serves as your primary proof of identity and citizenship when you are overseas and is also used during visa application and renewal processes. Without it, you can not leave the country or travel overseas.

Indian passports generally have a validity of 10 years, after which they need to be renewed or re-issued. So if your passport is nearing its expiration date and you wish to renew it, you must submit an online application at the official Passport Seva Kendra website.

In this blog, we have provided detailed instructions on how to renew your passport on the Passport Seva site. Read on to learn about the steps, documents and fees involved in the passport renewal process.

Registering For An Indian Passport Renewal Online

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website.

  • Click ‘New User Registration’ and fill out the registration form with a valid username, password, and contact details like your mobile number and Email ID.

  • Note: Ensure that the mobile number and email ID you provide are currently in use, as these will be used to inform you of your passport issuance details and application status.

  • Next, select the applicable passport office near you based on your current location/residential address, enter the correct Captcha and click ‘Register’.

  • You will be sent a verification link via email to your registered email ID. Click on the link provided in the email to verify your account and complete the registration process.

  • Once verified, your Passport Seva account will be activated.

Booking Your Passport Renewal Appointment Online

The passport renewal process can be done in two ways:

  • You can do this whole application process online by filling out the application form on the PSK website directly and then book your appointment, and pay your passport renewal fees through the site.

  • Or you download the E-Form, fill it out offline, upload it onto the site and continue the application process as stated above.

Both processes will work and will give you the same outcome. We have provided detailed instructions on how to do both processes in the following sections.

Method 1: Renew Your Passport Online

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website.

  • Click on ‘Existing User Login’

  • Enter your registered login ID and password. Click ‘Log in’.

  • Click on ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ to apply for your passport renewal and to book your passport renewal appointment.

  • You will be directed to fill out an online application form. Enter all the required details in the given fields, upload the necessary documents onto the site, and click ‘Save Application Form’.

  • Double-check all your entered information on the application form before clicking ‘Submit’.

  • Note: Finishing this step means that you have made an application and will generate an ARN number that you must maintain for future reference to track your application status.

  • To view your application, click the ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ option on your login page.

  • Next, click on ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ to book your appointment at your nearest passport office.

  • You will be directed to pay your application fees through the website. This can be done through any online payment method:

  • Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and/or Visa)

  • Internet Banking: State Bank of India (SBI), Associate Banks or Other Banks)

  • SBI Bank Challan

  • Once your payment has been processed, click ‘Print Application Receipt’ to print your application form containing your ARN (Application Reference Number) number.

  • You will also receive an SMS on your registered mobile number and a confirmation email on your registered email ID after booking your appointment.

  • You can either present your printed application receipt or the SMS or email containing your appointment details at the passport office to proceed with your in-person interview.

Method 2: E-Form Submission

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website.

  • Click ‘Download E-Form’ under the Forms and Affidavits tab on the homepage.

  • Select the ‘Fresh or Re-issue of Passport’ E-form option.

  • Fill in the downloaded E-Form the same way you would the online application form and click ‘Save and Validate’ once you are done.

  • This will generate an XML file that must be uploaded onto the Passport Seva site. You can not upload the PDF file as the site does not accept .pdf extension documents.

  • Click on ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ and click ‘Upload E-Form’ to upload your XML file.

  • Click ‘Submit’ to proceed to pay your application fees and book your appointment (Refer to steps 7 - 12 from Method 1).

How To Schedule Your Passport Renewal Appointment?

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website.

  • Click on ‘Check Appointment Availability’.

  • Select your passport office from the dropdown list and enter the correct Captcha.

  • Click the ‘Check Appointment Availability’ button.

How To Reschedule Your Passport Renewal Appointment?

In some cases, you may be unable to make it to your scheduled appointment date and will need to reschedule your passport renewal appointment. This process can be done online on the Passport Seva website as well.

  • Visit the official Passport Seva Kendra website and log in to your account.

  • Click on ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’.

  • The page will display all of your submitted and saved applications. Choose the application you wish to reschedule and click ‘Reschedule Appointment’.

  • Select a reason for rescheduling the appointment from the dropdown menu and select your new appointment date and time.

  • You do not need to pay any fees if this is your first time rescheduling an appointment on your account.

  • You will be sent an email and SMS on your registered email ID and mobile number about your rescheduled appointment details.

  • You can print out your new application receipt with the updated appointment details or show the SMS or email you received containing your new appointment details to the PSK office authorities to proceed with your in-office interview.

Each account allows for a maximum of 2 reschedules, after which you will be required to register for a new account if you wish to reschedule your passport renewal appointment.

It is advised that you try to avoid this, as you will be required to pay the passport renewal fee again, which is non-refundable. It is also best to avoid making too many accounts or continually rescheduling appointments, as it can draw suspicions about your intentions.
