With growing concern regarding road safety, choosing a car that prioritises the well-being of its occupants is more important than ever. Reviews and feedback can provide invaluable insights into a vehicle’s performance, reliability and most importantly, its safety features.

The Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP) has established itself as a trusted authority in assessing vehicle safety standards. By providing comprehensive ratings, Global NCAP empowers consumers to make educated choices about their automotive investments. This guide focuses on the Kwid safety rating, highlighting its key safety features.

What is Global NCAP Rating & How Does It Work?

The Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNAP) is an independent organisation established in 2011 that evaluates vehicle safety through rigorous crash tests. It serves as a standardised benchmark to assess the safety performance of cars worldwide. Global NCAP collaborates with governments, automakers and other stakeholders to promote higher safety standards and innovation in vehicle design, especially in emerging markets.

Global NCAP ratings are determined based on a front offset crash test, where a car collides with a deformable barrier at 64 km/h. The test simulates real-world crashes, using crash-test dummies representing adults and children to measure the impact on critical body parts such as the head, neck, chest and legs.

The ratings are divided into two categories, which are, Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection. For adults, the score is based on a 17-point scale, assessing seat belt effectiveness, airbag deployment and structural integrity. For children, it evaluates how well child seats project during crashes, using dummies of an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child, with a score out of 49.

A five-star rating signifies exceptional safety performance, incorporating advanced safety technologies. Lower ratings indicate areas of improvement, with one-star ratings revealing critical safety concerns. These ratings help consumers make informed decisions, prioritising safety alongside other factors like fuel efficiency.

What is the Renault Kwid Global NCAP Rating?

-Kwid NCAP Rating: Adult Occupant Protection

The Renault Kwid received a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection in the Global NCAP crash test, scoring 8.28 out of 17 points. The vehicle’s safety performance showed mixed results.

The dual front airbags provided adequate protection for the driver’s head and neck, but the chest protection was insufficient. Significant chest compression was observed during the crash test, which could lead to serious injuries in a real-world scenario.

Additionally, the knees of the passenger were at risk of impacting hazardous areas on the dashboard, increasing the chance of injury. The vehicle’s body shell was rated as unstable and was incapable of withstanding further loading in a crash, which raised concerns about its structural integrity. Although Renault reinforced the driver’s side, the passenger’s side was left vulnerable, leading to a low Kwid car safety rating.

-Kwid Crash Test Rating: Child Occupant Protection

In terms of child occupant protection, the Renault car safety rating indicated that the model fared poorly, scoring 10.91 out of 49 and earning a 1-star rating. During the crash test, the child seat for a 3-year-old failed to adequately control forward movement, resulting in high biomechanical stress on the child. Similarly, the 18-month-old child’s dummy performance allowed for head contact with the front seat, which could cause severe injuries.

The test also revealed insufficient installation instructions for child restraint systems (CRS), as well as the absence of ISOFIX child-seat mounts. The lack of proper rear seat belt configurations and passenger airbags further affected the car’s child protection performance, showing Renault Kwid’s significant limitations in protecting younger passengers during collisions.
